V.C. Summer OWS

Jenkinsville, South Carolina

In July, 2011 CB&I contracted with Garney to design, build and operate the Offsite Water Treatment System (“OWS”) located at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Generating Station. The OWS is currently under design and construction for the purpose of treating raw water from the Monticello Reservoir to produce filtered and potable water for the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station Units 1, 2 and 3.

This design-build-operate project consists of water treatment facility capable of producing 4.0 MGD filtered water and 0.25 MGD potable water using the ultrafiltration membrane and reverse osmosis process including complete laboratory facilities and control room. Another major element of the facility includes a land based raw water intake structure located at Lake Monticello. Designing and construction of the alternative raw water intake design allowed the client to realize a savings in excess of $600,000. This type of collaborative effort led CB&I to increase the scope of work at the project site to include a distribution pump station capable of distributing the filtered and potable water throughout the entire VC Summer Nuclear site. Other unique aspects of this design-build-operate project includes a highly sophisticated security and area lighting plan.

The project is located at an active nuclear power generating site which in itself offers a series of unique challenges. But with every challenge comes a reward and the Garney project team has worked closely with CB&I, SCE&G and SCDHEC to identify and solve these challenges early.  As in all Garney projects the close attention to safety, quality and timely delivery has set a clear path for a successful project in October 2014 at which time Garney will operate the plant for one year.
